The past few months have been a nightmare at work. It felt like my blood pressure was going up each night from the headaches of things not running smoothly as usual. Often times, I wanted to rip my hair out and slap somebody. I was even tempted to and came close to throwing some plates at people. I was really struggling through some extremely frustrating nights. And it was all due to the absence of our GOOD runner, Javiar. Freaking Javiar took off to Mexico for a few months to deal with some personal matters. Thanks a lot, Javier for the shit I had to go through while you were not there! I hate every other runner besides you. I’m so glad you are back.
Often times when I can’t find R, I’ll resort to asking the waiters to run the food. When they are not that busy, they will gladly take it. Other times when the waiters (and the rest of us) are swamped, they will say, “That is the job of the runner. Where is the runner?!” I’ll run around all over the place trying to track him down, and guess where I end up finding him? Outside just chillin’ and texting or watching porn or whatever it is on his phone. And I just wasted a good minute of my time looking for him and get a minute behind with my orders as well.
I’ve never liked L. He is crazy and annoying. The whole presence about him makes me cringe. He makes weird random noises, and just seems off. He’ll be drying wine glasses and then randomly make duck quacking noises, or he will start singing off key with his God awful voice. OMG it really really makes my ears bleed because it sounds more horrible than any other singing I have ever heard. I just can’t stand him. But I must admit, he was better at running than F has been.
Every time he came to my station to pick up the food, I found him always gradually crossing the line. It seemed unconscious and a bad habit that needed to be broken. To make things clearer for him, I put up a masking tape to mark the border of where he cannot cross. But that didn’t work out too well either. He thought I was just playing around.
So the next day, when I have calmed down (and not in the crazy-half-dying-from-the-hunger mode), I got a chance to talk to F about the line crossing matter. I explained why he should never cross the line during service. And I think I got through to him finally. He’s been good about not crossing the line since.
A lot of nights when I got frustrated, I’d blurt out that I missed Javiar. “Where’s Javiar when I need him?! You are driving me nuts (to whoever was the runner for that night)!” I don’t know how long Javiar has been working at the restaurant. He was there before me. Things run smoothly on nights when Javiar is around. He is attentive and rarely makes mistakes, making my job (and the rest of the BOH) easier. But yeah, I was not looking forward to going to work most of the nights while Javiar was gone because I was cringing at the thought of having to deal with the other stupid runner(s) all night.
