So I followed the smell to the funnel cake stand. I’ve had some bad food at carnivals and fairs before (did I mention that I hate fairs and carnivals? But I love amusement parks!). But I don’t think I’ve ever had bad funnel cake anywhere. And I usually share it since it’s too much to eat it all by myself. The hot, steamy, sweet-smelling, coated in powdered sugar treat, made all of the misery from the uncomfortable heat and disappointment, magically disappear (momentarily anyways lol).
When you think of funnel cakes, you think of fun times. -fun in the sun, munching on it while waiting in line for a ride, creating memories with friends and family. A day at a carnival or an amusement park wouldn’t be the same without that hot, fresh-out-of-the-fryer yummy goodness.
I went to the Upland Lemon Festival this weekend. It was scorching hot, so we didn’t stay long. It was my first time attending this event, and it was different than what I was expecting. I guess what I had in mind was literally a “lemonland”…with all the different lemon varieties from different vendors to pick through, and all kinds of lemony desserts made from lemons….and not just desserts, maybe a showcasing of different dishes that were made with the lemons. Maybe a salad tossed in a lemon vinaigrette of some sort (with freshly squeezed lemons), different lemon flavored chicken dishes, or even pasta tossed in a lemony sauce… I don’t know! Perhaps I overestimated the complexity of it all. I was looking forward to all the lemony culinary explorations.
But it was nothing more than an ordinary fair. They had frozen lemonade (most fairs do). They had all the typical fair stuff…the rides, various vendors, porta potties (which I never use unless it’s a dire emergency), and the typical fair food. I had ribs from Ray’s Ribs (one of the vendors there) that were bland and dry. The scorching hot weather and bad food were making me miserable. But the familiar scent of funnel cake nearby was starting to make me feel warm and giddy inside. We all know that the sense of smell is associated with memory. And the smell of funnel cake that I was following towards, was taking me back to all the fun, carefree times I’ve had whenever funnel cake was around, – going to a carnival and having funnel cake for the first time, the time I spent a holiday weekend at Disneyland with family and had warm funnel cake while watching a parade, the time I waited hours in line to ride Boomerang (when it first came out in the 80’s) at Knott’s Berry Farm and eating a funnel cake (I still have pictures).
