I recently started a thread on Cheftalk.com, a discussion forum where professionals in the industry come to share stories, experiences, tips, and more. My post ignited a wild fire (not in a good way lol). It sparked so many negative responses and I’ve been labeled as a “bigot” and a “racist”, which is anything but the truth. I am beginning to acknowledge that some people can be really stupid and hear only the things they want to hear. They have totally misconstrued my content, and are too oblivious to understand the point and the question I was trying to get across, automatically assuming I was full of bigotry. Wow…my first experience with the “internet meanies” (each new experience is a step towards growth, which means I am gradually heading towards growth as a blogger..even though the forum is technically not my blog, or a blog site at all..but still. Yay!).
The topic of the thread was “Spanish in the (professional) kitchen.” I shared a little about my experience with this topic and wanted to hear from others about their thoughts and experience on this matter. Spanish is spoken more than English in many of the professional kitchens. And some companies actually only want to hire applicants that can speak and understand Spanish. And I strongly believe that when someone moves to another country, it is their responsibility to learn the language of that country, not the other way around. And well….that turned into an endless debate. Some people posted some nasty, negative, disrespectful comments, thus leading to a LOCK on the thread. They were treating me like I was a member of the KKK, when I, too, am a minority lol.
